Author Event: Andy Parker
On the morning of August 26, 2015, a horrific event unfolded on a live television newscast. Twenty- four-year-old reporter Alison Parker, and twenty-seven-year-old photojournalist Adam Ward, were murdered and their interviewee, Vicki Gardner, was shot, but survived. Their killer not only planned the act, but strapped a GoPro to his head, filmed it, and posted it to social media. Receiving that news would change any parent and Alison’s father Andy Parker, was certainly no different.
Reeling from his daughter’s death and with facts of the tragedy still coming to light, Andy agrees to a television interview. Emotional and exhausted he makes a vow, “I am going to do something, whatever it takes, to get gun legislation, to shame people, to shame legislators into doing something about closing loopholes and background checks and making sure crazy people don’t get guns.” True to his word, Andy Parker became a national advocate for commonsense gun safety legislation.
For Alison: The Murder of a Young Journalist and a Father's Fight for Gun Safety by Andy Parker with Ben R. Williams is not only about that fateful day. It’s about how one individual can advocate for, and advance, a cause in his state and in our nation. It’s about how an unimaginable loss can catapult a family into the spotlight and them turning that attention into a crusade for gun reform. And it’s about Alison, an intelligent, ambitious, young woman from a tight knit family whose star was on the rise.
Andy Parker has worked to develop commonsense gun legislation with activists such as the Giffords organization, the Brady Campaign, Everytown for Gun Safety, and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. He’s appeared on all the major television networks and been interviewed by numerous other publications. He and his wife Barbara run the For Alison Foundation, which creates opportunities for children in southern Virginia to experience the arts.
