Government Affairs Committee
Join the Government Affairs Committee for their monthly update on June 5. Our guest will be Lorrin Freeman, Wake County's first woman District Attorney.
For over 20 years Lorrin Freeman has distinguished herself by playing a central role in forming a trusted criminal justice system in Wake County. She was elected to be Wake County's first woman District Attorney in 2014 and was reelected in 2018. The Wake County District Attorney is the top law enforcement officer and head prosecutor in Wake County playing a critical role in keeping our community safe. The Wake County District Attorney is also charged with investigating and prosecuting corruption and lack of transparency among elected officials, state employees, agencies and departments. During the last three years, she has handled important public corruption and some first degree murder cases personally. As District Attorney, she has been called upon to make tough decisions in many cases subject to public scrutiny as well as to lead a staff of close to ninety attorneys and victim service assistants.
Prior to her 2014 election, Lorrin served as the Wake County Clerk of Superior Court for eight years. Lorrin became widely respected for her efforts to build and maintain an efficient and accessible courthouse. She modernized the technology in the Clerk’s office to meet the needs of the growing county. She was recognized by her peers in 2010 when they presented her with the President’s Award from the NC Conference of Clerks of Superior Court. In 2012, she was elected President of the North Carolina Conference of Clerks of Superior Court.
Lorrin seeks to reduce the incidence of crime in Wake County. She supports programs that divert the mentally ill out of the criminal justice system and programs that help treat addictions that can lead to crime. She also supports helping teen offenders turn their lives around rather than have them routed into a cycle of criminality through early incarceration.
The Government Affairs Committee's monthly updates in 2019 are featuring elected officials and staff from local, county, and state government. This is your opportunity to hear from, and ask questions of the people who represent you and your business. We hope you'll join us! A light breakfast will be provided. Please register so we know how much coffee to brew.
